Description
Common Name: African Ropefish
Scientific Name: Erpetoichthys calabaricus
Other Names: Reedfish, Rope Fish, Snakefish
African Ropefish, scientifically known as Erpetoichthys calabaricus, is also commonly referred to as Reedfish, Rope Fish, and Snakefish. This unique species captivates aquarists with its elongated and eel-like body, dark brown to olive coloration with lighter bands, and a distinctive dorsal fin running along its back. The African Ropefish's serpentine appearance adds a captivating and unusual dimension to any freshwater aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution:
West and Central Africa. African Ropefish inhabit slow-moving or stagnant freshwater environments, such as swamps, streams, and flooded areas. They are often found in regions with dense aquatic vegetation and submerged structures, using these as hiding spots and shelters.
Size and Lifespan:
In the wild, African Ropefish can reach sizes of 16 to 20 inches. In captivity, they generally grow to around 12 to 15 inches. The lifespan of African Ropefish ranges from 8 to 12 years or more when provided with proper care and suitable conditions.
Diet and Behavior:
African Ropefish are carnivorous and primarily consume small fish, insects, and aquatic invertebrates in their natural habitat. In an aquarium, they can be fed a diet consisting of live or frozen foods such as fish, shrimp, earthworms, and insects. These fish exhibit peaceful and slow-moving behavior, often gliding through the water and resting among aquatic plants and decorations.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Breeding African Ropefish in captivity remains a challenge due to limited knowledge about their reproductive behavior and requirements. Some reports indicate successful breeding in well-established and spacious aquariums, but detailed information is scarce.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
African Ropefish need a roomy tank with a minimum size of 75 gallons to accommodate their potential size and ensure ample swimming space. The aquarium should offer hiding places, such as plants, rocks, and driftwood, mimicking their natural habitat. Maintain water temperature between 75-82°F (24-28°C) and pH range of 6.0-7.5. Water quality and filtration are crucial, as Ropefish are sensitive to poor water conditions.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Peaceful and non-aggressive tank mates are suitable for coexisting with African Ropefish, such as similarly-sized fish that don't nip at their fins. Compatible tank mates include angelfish, gouramis, larger tetras, and peaceful cichlids.
Difficulty Level:
Keeping African Ropefish is moderately challenging due to their specific care requirements, sensitivity to water conditions, and potential feeding difficulties.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-10 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: < 20 ppm
Additional Information:
- African Ropefish exhibit a unique breathing behavior, surfacing to gulp air using their specialized swim bladder functioning as a lung.
- Known for their curiosity, these fish explore their surroundings by wriggling on the substrate or through aquatic vegetation.
- The species is highly adaptable and resilient when provided with appropriate care and environmental conditions.
- While not commonly bred in captivity, ongoing efforts to understand their breeding behavior contribute to the aquarium hobby's knowledge base.
