Common Name: Orinoco Peacock Bass
Scientific Name: Cichla orinocensis
Other Names: Butterfly Peacock Bass, Orinoco Butterfly Peacock
Description:
The Orinoco Peacock Bass, like other members of its genus, is a robust and strikingly colored fish. It sports a predominantly green and gold coloration, often with distinctive dark spots or patterns on its sides. The species often has a pronounced black “eye-spot” near the base of the tail, which can be a striking feature.
Habitat and Distribution:
Cichla orinocensis is native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. They inhabit slow-moving waters, such as river backwaters, lakes, and floodplain areas where they lurk amongst submerged structures to ambush prey.
Size and Lifespan:
The Orinoco Peacock Bass can grow up to 18-20 inches in captivity, although larger specimens have been documented in the wild. With proper care, they can live for 8-10 years or more.
Diet and Behavior:
Being a predator, the Orinoco Peacock Bass feeds primarily on smaller fish and crustaceans in the wild. In an aquarium setting, they can be fed a diet of high-quality pellets, live fish (like feeder fish), and frozen foods like shrimp. Their ambush predator nature makes them an exciting fish to observe during feeding times.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Peacock Bass are open spawners, typically choosing a flat substrate to lay their eggs. After spawning, both parents play a role in guarding the eggs and fry against potential threats.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
Due to their size and active nature, a large aquarium is a must. A minimum tank size of 150 gallons is recommended for a single adult, but larger tanks are preferable, especially for multiple individuals or community tanks. The tank should include hiding places using large rocks, driftwood, and robust plants, although they may uproot plants when they are in pursuit of food.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Orinoco Peacock Bass can be aggressive, especially during feeding or breeding. They do best with other large, semi-aggressive fish that can hold their own, such as other cichlids, catfish, or large characins. Smaller fish will likely become meals.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. Their size, diet, and potential for aggression require experienced fish keepers who can meet their needs.
Water Parameters:
• Temperature: 75-85°F (24-29°C)
• pH: 6.0 - 7.5
• General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH
• Carbonate Hardness (KH): 4-8 dKH
• Ammonia: 0 ppm
• Nitrite: 0 ppm
• Nitrate: <20 ppm
Additional Information:
• Due to their aggressive feeding behavior, a secure lid is essential to prevent them from accidentally jumping out during feeding times.
• Regular water changes and powerful filtration are crucial to maintain good water quality, given their size and feeding habits.

No, we do not possess an Export License to ship fish overseas. We are only able to ship within the Continental United States.
We offer overnight shipping to the following locations:
Continental United States: Flat Rate $29.99
Alaska: Flat Rate $99.99
We ship using UPS Next Day Air on almost all shipments. This is an overnight service that arrives directly at your doorstep.
On some local shipments we may use UPS Ground in instances where the package will still arrive overnight, and on some very large orders or orders containing very large fish, we may require Airport Delivery via Southwest Cargo.
We ship Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, which means packages are delivered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Please specify what day works best for you to receive on the Cart page prior to check out. If no date is selected prior to check out, your order will be shipped the next available day at our convenience. Please keep in mind that most fish require at least 2 days to clear out their digestive systems before shipping, which may delay shipping them out until the following week depending on when the order was placed.
If your order is shipping in below 50°F temperatures or above 90°F, you must add Cold Weather or Hot Weather Packaging to your order prior to checkout, as our Standard Packaging will not withstand these temperatures.
The overwhelming majority of orders that we ship are delivered using UPS Next Day Air, however this shipping method is not ideal for orders containing a lot of fish or very large sized fish. Each order is unique and we do not have a formula to calculate which shipping method will be required, but generally unless your order contains dozens of medium sized fish or a monster-sized fish, your order will ship direct to your doorstep. If you are considering placing a order and are curious if it would require Airport Delivery, please contact us prior to ordering.
If we determine that an order needs to be shipped using air cargo and UPS Next Day Air is still preferred, we can ship it via UPS at the buyers expense.
Air freight combined with ground shipping has been a safe and reliable method for transporting aquarium fish for many years. Today, the use of air transportation has expanded to include aquaculture products such as eggs, fry, and fingerlings, which are shipped in boxes. With the advent of modern air transportation and safe packaging practices, fish can now be shipped to virtually any part of the world and arrive at their destination in healthy condition. The fact is, no matter where you purchase your aquarium fish from, they have likely already been transported at least once via air frieght and/or ground shipping.

We are located in Texas, meaning that while we may be better than the rest of y'all in the country, we unfortunately can not carry many of the species that we would like to. This includes fish such as Freshwater Stingrays, Piranha, Arapaima, Electric Eels, Wolf Fish, and Payara just to name a few. For a full list of restricted species in Texas, head to Texas Parks & Wildlife's list of Invasive, Prohibited and Exotic Species.
For both seasoned fish enthusiasts and those new to aquariums, purchasing fish online is a convenient option for those seeking a wider range of species than what is typically available at your local fish stores. By buying online from us, you are also effectively reducing the number of times that your fish are cycled from tank to tank during the process of getting those fish to your local fish store in most cases, which usually results in less stress on the fish and a lower end cost to you. That being said, buying online still has its limitations and will never be comparable to the experience of shopping in person, but for many folks the trade-off is worth it.
