Common Name: Clown Knifefish
Scientific Name: Chitala ornata

The Clown Knifefish is a captive-bred knifefish and one of the most recognizable predatory fish in the hobby. Clown knifefish have a silvery, laterally compressed body with a long, rippling anal fin that runs into the tail, and a row of black spots ringed in white along the rear of the body. It is an unusual and interesting fish that is highly prized by aquarists who enjoy Asian species.
Habitat and Distribution:
Chitala ornata is native to Southeast Asia (Mekong and Chao Phraya basins), where it lives in lakes, swamps and slow-moving rivers. These waters are warm and seasonally flooded, with plenty of submerged vegetation and wood for cover.
Size and Lifespan:
It commonly reaches 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) in aquariums. With proper care they commonly live 10-15 years.
Diet and Behavior:
It is carnivorous and feeds on fish, shrimp and insects in the wild. In the aquarium, offer shrimp, krill, fish and sinking carnivore pellets. It is a nocturnal predator that eats small fish, peaceful toward large tank mates but can be aggressive toward its own kind. Feed a varied diet and remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Clown knifefish are commercially bred in Southeast Asia. The eggs are laid on hard surfaces and guarded by the male.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A tank of 250 gallons or more is recommended for adults. Provide caves or driftwood for daytime cover, subdued lighting and strong filtration. The water temperature should be kept between 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a pH of 6.0-7.5 and soft to hard water. Regular partial water changes are essential to maintain water quality, and new arrivals should be acclimated slowly.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Good tank mates include large, robust fish such as arowanas, large catfish and large cichlids. As with any aquarium, introduce new fish carefully and watch for signs of stress or aggression.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. It grows large and is predatory. It is best suited to experienced aquarists who can provide the space and water quality it needs.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-8 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm (regular water changes required)
Additional Information:
- It is most active at night, so provide caves or driftwood for daytime cover.
- It can be aggressive toward its own kind.
- Fun fact: Knifefish swim by rippling their long anal fin, allowing them to move forward and backward with ease.
The Clown Knifefish is a classic, graceful predator for large aquariums. With the right setup and care, it will be a rewarding addition for many years.
