Description
Common Name: Luteus Pleco Phase 1
Scientific Name: Hypostomus luteus
The Luteus Pleco is a wild-caught golden pleco from southern South America. It is a golden-yellow Hypostomus whose color varies considerably between individuals, from speckled to nearly solid yellow, which is why fish are sold by phase or grade. Like other plecos, it has an armored body and a sucker-like mouth that it uses to cling to surfaces and graze. This fish is graded Phase 1, as listed in the title.
Habitat and Distribution:
The luteus pleco is native to the upper Rio Uruguay basin of southern Brazil and Argentina, where it lives in cool, fast-flowing rivers with rocky bottoms that are cooler than most tropical pleco habitats. These habitats provide plenty of surfaces for grazing and crevices for shelter, and the flowing water keeps oxygen levels high.
Size and Lifespan:
Adults reach about 14-18 inches (35-45 cm). Hypostomus plecos are long-lived, and 10-15 years or more is typical with good care.
Diet and Behavior:
Luteus plecos are omnivorous and graze algae, biofilm and invertebrates in the wild. In the aquarium, offer algae wafers, vegetables, sinking pellets and occasional shrimp. They are peaceful toward other fish but can be territorial with other plecos. Feed a varied diet and remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Like other Hypostomus, the luteus pleco is a cavity spawner that uses burrows or holes, with the male guarding the eggs. Breeding in aquariums is rare.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A tank of at least 180 gallons is recommended for an adult. Provide plenty of driftwood, caves and rockwork, a sand or fine gravel substrate, and efficient filtration with good water movement and high oxygen levels. Regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality. Avoid keeping this species warm long term. The water temperature should be kept between 64-75°F (18-24°C), with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and soft to moderately hard water.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Good tank mates include other peaceful fish that tolerate cooler, subtropical water, such as many barbs, loaches and subtropical cichlids. Avoid housing it with other large, territorial plecos in smaller tanks. As with any aquarium, introduce new fish carefully and watch for signs of stress or aggression.
Difficulty Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. Luteus plecos are hardy, but their large size and preference for cooler water require planning. It is best suited to experienced aquarists who can provide the space and water quality it needs.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 64-75°F (18-24°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- General Hardness (GH): 4-12 dGH
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-8 dKH
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm (regular water changes required)
Additional Information:
- Luteus plecos come from subtropical waters and do best at cooler temperatures than most tropical plecos.
- Their yellow coloration varies from fish to fish, which is why they are graded by phase.
- They are powerful fish that can rearrange décor, so secure rocks and equipment.
The Luteus Pleco Phase 1 is a striking golden pleco for keepers with a large, cooler aquarium. With the right setup and care, it will be a rewarding addition for many years.
