Common Name: Red Tail x Tiger Shovelnose Catfish Hybrid
Scientific Name: Phractocephalus hemioliopterus x Pseudoplatystoma sp.
The Red Tail x Tiger Shovelnose Catfish is a captive-bred hybrid of the redtail catfish and the tiger shovelnose catfish, two large predatory catfish from South America. This hybrid typically combines the broad head and red-orange tail of the redtail catfish with the longer body and spotted or striped pattern of the tiger shovelnose, although appearance varies between individuals. It is a hardy, impressive catfish that is highly prized by monster-fish keepers.
Habitat and Distribution:
As a man-made hybrid, it does not occur in the wild. Both parent species come from the large rivers, lakes and flooded forests of South America’s Amazon and Orinoco basins. These are large, productive waterways with plenty of prey and structure for these powerful predators.
Size and Lifespan:
Adults often reach 3 feet (90 cm) or more. Lifespan in captivity is not well documented for this species, but with good care it can be expected to live for many years.
Diet and Behavior:
This hybrid is carnivorous, like both parent species, which feed mainly on fish and crustaceans in the wild. In the aquarium, offer large sinking carnivore pellets with occasional fish or shrimp, and avoid overfeeding. It is peaceful toward fish too large to eat, but will swallow any fish that fits in its mouth. Feed a varied diet and remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality.
Breeding and Reproduction:
This hybrid is produced on fish farms by crossing the two parent species, usually with hormone-induced spawning. It is not bred in home aquariums.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
An adult needs a custom system of 500 gallons or more with powerful filtration, as large catfish eat heavily and produce a lot of waste. Keep décor minimal and securely fixed, and plan for its adult size from the start, as it grows quickly. The water temperature should be kept between 72-82°F (22-28°C), with a pH of 6.0-7.5 and soft to hard water. Regular partial water changes are essential to maintain water quality, and new arrivals should be acclimated slowly.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Keep it only with very large, robust fish that cannot fit in its mouth, such as large pacu, arowanas and other large catfish. Anything small enough to swallow will eventually be eaten. As with any aquarium, introduce new fish carefully and watch for signs of stress or aggression.
Difficulty Level:
Advanced. Its large adult size, fast growth and heavy waste output require a very large system and a long-term commitment. It is recommended only for experienced aquarists with the resources to meet its long-term needs.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)
-

Additional Information:
- Plan for its adult size from the start, as it grows quickly.
- As with most hybrids, adult size, shape and pattern vary from fish to fish.
- Avoid overfeeding; adults do not need to eat every day.
The Red Tail x Tiger Shovelnose Catfish Hybrid is an impressive, fast-growing catfish for keepers with room for a very large aquarium.
