Common Name: Snow White Bristlenose Pleco
Scientific Name: Ancistrus sp.
Other Names: Bristlenose Pleco, Bushynose Pleco
The Snow White Bristlenose Pleco is a captive-bred color form of one of the hobby’s most popular plecos. It has bright white coloration in place of the usual mottled brown. Mature males develop the bushy bristles on the snout that give the bristlenose its name, while females have few or none. Like other plecos, it has an armored body and a sucker-like mouth that it uses to cling to surfaces and graze.
Habitat and Distribution:
Bristlenose plecos belong to a genus native to South America, where they live in rivers and streams among rocks and driftwood. This color form is captive-bred and does not occur in the wild. These habitats provide plenty of surfaces for grazing and crevices for shelter, and the flowing water keeps oxygen levels high.
Size and Lifespan:
Adults reach about 4-5 inches (10-13 cm). With proper care they commonly live 5-10 years or more.
Diet and Behavior:
Bristlenose plecos are omnivorous grazers that feed on algae, biofilm and plant matter in the wild. In the aquarium, offer algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini, and sinking pellets, plus driftwood to graze on. They are peaceful and make excellent community fish. Feed a varied diet and remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Bristlenose plecos breed readily in aquariums. They are cave spawners: the female lays a clutch of eggs in a cave, and the male guards and fans them until the fry are free-swimming.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended. Provide plenty of driftwood, caves and rockwork, a sand or fine gravel substrate, and efficient filtration with good water movement and high oxygen levels. Regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality. The water temperature should be kept between 72-80°F (22-27°C), with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. New arrivals should be acclimated slowly.
Ideal Tank Mates:
They can be kept with a wide range of peaceful community fish, such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras, dwarf cichlids and other small catfish. Provide a cave for each pleco and avoid housing them with large, aggressive species that may stress or injure them. As with any aquarium, introduce new fish carefully and watch for signs of stress or aggression.
Difficulty Level:
Beginner. Bristlenose plecos are hardy, adaptable and one of the best plecos for community aquariums. With stable water quality and a suitable tank, it is a rewarding fish for newer aquarists.

Additional Information:
- Bristlenose plecos are among the best algae-grazing plecos for community tanks.
- Driftwood is an important part of their diet and habitat.
- Their modest adult size makes them suitable for much smaller tanks than common plecos.
The Snow White Bristlenose Pleco is a hardy, attractive algae grazer that suits almost any community aquarium. With the right setup and care, it will be a rewarding addition for many years.
