Common Name: Spotcheek Cichlid
Scientific Name: Thorichthys ellioti
The Spotcheek Cichlid is a wild-caught cichlid from southern Mexico. Thorichthys ellioti is a close relative of the firemouth cichlid, with iridescent scales and a dark spot on each gill cover, which it displays by flaring its gill covers and throat when threatened or courting. It is a hardy, colorful cichlid that is well suited to Central American community tanks.
Habitat and Distribution:
Thorichthys ellioti is native to the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico, in the Rio Papaloapan basin, where it lives in rivers and streams. Thorichthys species typically forage over open sand near rocks, roots and leaf litter that provide cover. The water in this region is typically warm and moderately hard, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
Size and Lifespan:
It reaches about 5 inches (13 cm). Lifespan in captivity is not well documented for this species, but with good care it can be expected to live for many years.
Diet and Behavior:
Like other Thorichthys, it is an omnivore that sifts mouthfuls of sand for small invertebrates and plant matter. In the aquarium, offer quality pellets and flakes along with frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and mysis. It is moderately aggressive and becomes territorial when breeding, but it is usually fine with similar-sized fish. Feed a varied diet and remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality.
Breeding and Reproduction:
Thorichthys are open substrate spawners. A bonded pair cleans a flat stone or patch of substrate, the female lays her eggs, and both parents guard the eggs and fry. Pairs can become territorial during this time, so provide enough space and cover for other fish.
Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements:
A tank of at least 40 gallons is recommended for an adult pair. Provide a soft sand substrate so it can sift for food, with rocks and driftwood arranged to create territories and cover, and efficient filtration. The water temperature should be kept between 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a pH of 7.0-8.0 and soft to hard water. Regular partial water changes are essential to maintain water quality, and new arrivals should be acclimated slowly.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Good tank mates include other Central American cichlids of similar size and temperament, such as firemouths, as well as larger livebearers and catfish. As with any aquarium, introduce new fish carefully and watch for signs of stress or aggression.
Difficulty Level:
Beginner to Intermediate. It is hardy and adaptable. Aquarists with some basic experience should find it straightforward to keep.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
-
pH: 7.0-8.0
-
General Hardness (GH): 8-18 dGH
-
Carbonate Hardness (KH): 5-12 dKH
-
Ammonia: 0 ppm
-
Nitrite: 0 ppm
-
Nitrate: <20 ppm (regular water changes required)
Additional Information:
- Like the firemouth, it flares its gill covers to display its dark cheek spots when threatened or courting.
- It sifts sand for food, so a soft sand substrate is recommended.
- Pairs become territorial when breeding, so provide plenty of cover and space.
The Spotcheek Cichlid is a hardy, attractive Central American cichlid. With the right setup and care, it will be a rewarding addition for many years.
